Philanthropist Mackenzie Scott has once again made headlines with a powerful act of generosity—this time awarding $42 million to Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), a historically Black college and university (HBCU) in North Carolina.
The gift was the largest dollar per student enrolled gift of any historically black college and university (HBCU) among Ms. Scott’s recent gifts, and almost triple what ECSU received from Ms. Scott in 2020. More importantly, it comes at a pivotal time at the university, as ECSU just launched its five-year strategic plan—ASCEND 2030.
A Major Investment in HBCU Excellence
Elizabeth City State University, known for its commitment to academic excellence and community impact, will use the funding to expand student support services, strengthen academic programs, and invest in long-term infrastructure improvements.
University leadership described the donation as “transformational,” noting that it will directly benefit students through scholarships, faculty development, and enhanced campus resources. The funding is unrestricted, allowing ECSU to strategically allocate resources where they are needed most.
"Gifts like this do more than provide resources; they accelerate momentum. This gift allows institutions like Elizabeth City State University to move boldly toward the future while remaining grounded in the mission that has guided us for 135 years.“
Why This Gift Matters
Mackenzie Scott’s philanthropic approach continues to stand out for its trust-based model—providing large, unrestricted donations to institutions with proven impact. Her contributions to HBCUs in recent years have helped close funding gaps and elevate opportunities for underserved students.
This $42 million donation arrives at a critical time when many HBCUs are scaling innovation, expanding enrollment, and addressing long-standing disparities in funding.
With this investment, ECSU is expected to:
-Increase financial aid and scholarship opportunities
-Enhance STEM and workforce development programs
-Improve campus facilities and digital infrastructure
-Expand community outreach and partnerships
University officials emphasized that the donation will not only support current students but also strengthen the institution’s long-term sustainability.
Mackenzie Scott's Continued Commitment to Equity in Education
Mackenzie Scott has become one of the most influential philanthropists supporting educational equity. Her continued focus on HBCUs reflects a broader commitment to institutions that have historically served Black communities and produced generations of leaders.
This latest gift further underscores the vital role HBCUs play in shaping the future—and the importance of investing in their success.
