The National Science Foundation (NSF) has tapped Morehouse as a key partner in its massive Leadership-Class Computing Facility (LCCF) initiative—a whopping $457 million investment aimed at advancing high-performance computing across the country.
Morehouse College in Atlanta has secured a pivotal role in one of the National Science Foundation's most ambitious endeavors yet: a $457 million investment to build Horizon, a landmark supercomputer that will rank among the Southeast's most powerful academic systems.
What Is the NSF Leadership-Class Computing Facility (LCCF) Project?
The NSF's LCCF initiative funds next-generation high-performance computing to drive breakthroughs in AI, climate science, machine learning, and biomedical research. Led by the Texas Advanced Computing Center at UT Austin, the project brings together partners nationwide. Morehouse stands out as a primary partner, housing Horizon and leading efforts to make advanced computing more inclusive.
Morehouse's $5 Million Grant and Horizon Hosting Role
Through its Center for Broadening Participation in Computing, Morehouse received an initial $5 million NSF grant to construct the Horizon hosting site. This elevates the college's cyberinfrastructure and opens world-class resources to students, faculty, and HBCUs across the country.
"This partnership positions our students and faculty to help shape the future of science, technology, and global problem-solving.“
"This cements Morehouse's place as the undisputed HBCU leader in artificial intelligence... we will empower other HBCUs and non-research-intensive institutions.“

Morehouse Programs to Broaden AI and Computing Access
Morehouse will launch free initiatives including:
• Summer enrichment for middle and high school boys
• Postbaccalaureate AI program
• Faculty accelerators in Punta Cana focused on research, teaching, and grants
These efforts address diversity in tech and build capacity at HBCUs.
Morehouse plans to share updates and insights at the annual InSPIRE Workshop in Austin, Texas, further supporting AI in teaching and entrepreneurship.
It's a proud milestone that reinforces Morehouse's long-standing commitment to equity and excellence in STEM.
